Can you "Kondo" your mind?

fierce habit lifestyle Mar 19, 2019

Short answer? Yes.

And, it's about choosing joy.

~~~~~
But first, what does "Kondo" mean?
~~~~~

"Kondo" is referring to best-selling author and acclaimed tidying expert, Marie Kondo, who is dedicated to inspiring the world to choose joy with the KonMari Method™ by organizing our belongings, homes, and lives.

"The KonMari Method™ is a state of mind – and a way of life – that encourages cherishing the things that spark joy in one’s life. Belongings are acknowledged for their service – and thanked before being let go, should they no longer spark joy."

This method gained popularity in 2011 with the release of Marie Kondo's first book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up".  Then, at the beginning of this year, Netflix launched a new series called, "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo" which catapulted The KonMari Method™ into a new stratosphere.

"To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose." ~ Marie Kondo

~~~~~
People around the world are drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and optimistic.
And, this is why we can "Kondo" our minds.
Even when we've made big changes in our physical world, we can keep getting tripped up in our minds when we hold on to old brain clutter.
With our minds, we're talking about tidying up our headspace and letting go of the things that no longer spark joy, whether that's negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, self-sabotaging behavior, repeating patterns, "bad" habits, etc.
Today, I'm sharing 5 steps to do exactly that.
~~~~~

Using The KonMari Method™ to Kondo your mind:

  1. Commit to tidying up
    • The first step is to commit to tidying up your headspace and let go of the thoughts, beliefs, patterns, & habits that no longer serve your life.
    • Change is challenging and every single change requires a commitment to do the work.
    • When you commit, you keep going, no matter how hard it gets
  2. Imagine your tidy mind
    • Once you've committed to change, you need to know how this commitment to change will positively impact your life
    • Imagine, envision, and/or write down all the ways your tidy mind will look and feel like when you let go of your negative headspace
    • Who will you be without these thoughts, beliefs, patterns?  What will be possible for you without them?
    • This is a POWERFUL step. Please do this one.
  3. Identify the category
    • This is probably one of the MOST important steps in the KonMari Method™ and what separates it from other methods
    • The goal here is to focus on one category in the mind instead of trying to let go of all negative thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, patterns, etc.
    • Identify the one category that needs the most attention - is it your relationships, your self-esteem, your career, your physical health?
  4. Finish letting go first
    • Ask yourself what you want to let go of to move forward in the category you've chosen
    • In relationships this can be letting go of unrealistic expectations, trying to change a person, poor communication skills, etc
    • In careers this can be letting go of the fear of trying something new, asking for a raise, hiring a team, etc.
    • Writing these down or talking it out with a friend is extremely helpful
    • Remind yourself of step #2... visualize what's possible... in detail!
  5. Does it spark joy?
    • Now, we can ask this beautiful question, "Does what's left (in this case, the remaining thoughts, beliefs, habits, etc.) spark joy?"
    • If you operate in this tidied-up new headspace, will you feel joy in your heart?
    • If yes, you're on the right track!
    • If no, or you feel unsure, then repeat steps 2-4 until you get closer to that joyful feeling of wholeheartedly answering yes!

~~~~~
Just like anything new or worth doing, this takes practice.  Inevitably, we'll find ourselves in a negative headspace again, repeating thoughts or patterns that absolutely do not spark joy... and this is ok.  After all, we're human.
When we "Kondo" our minds, we are simply creating awareness of what we're mentally ready to let go of.  This gives us more tools in our FIERCE toolbox to have at the ready any time we need them.
Try it... you just might like what you find...
and my hope is that you find the spark of joy you seek.
