In order to prioritize ourselves, though, we have to know why we’re worth it. And oftentimes we need a reminder of exactly that.

As fall ushers in a slower season, what if we spent the rest of the month focusing on loving ourselves better? After all…

Are you expecting your partner, friends, or family members to shower you with compliments, wait on you hand and foot, and/or praise your many accomplishments…

Yet you…

Pick apart your reflection in the mirror

“Fuel” your body with too-much caffeine and too-little sleep, and

Downplay your achievements time and time again….

Does any of this ring a bell?

I’ll say that again… how you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.

Let that sink in!

In order to prioritize ourselves, we’ve got to fall back in love with ourselves. Carving out time to love yourself will be the best thing you can do for your body, mind, soul, AND your relationships.

So here are some small but mighty ways to tend to yourself with gentleness and compassion, the ultimate way to show yourself some much needed self-love.

Be kind to yourself

Loving ourselves now, amidst the uncertain and stressful state of the world, is more important now than ever before.
Holistic psychotherapist and life coach Lucía Garcia-Giurgiu explains that being kind to ourselves lowers anxiety and helps foster grit and resilience. Garcia-Giurgiu claims that “practicing self-compassion…builds an inner sense of safety and strengthens what in psychology is called our 'internal locus of control'—a sense that you have control over aspects of your life.”
And when you’re kind to yourself, it’s so much easier to be kind to others. The world could use a ripple effect of kindness right about now, don’t you think?

Exercise

I’m sure you know by now that exercise has so many benefits! Exercise relieves stress, improves cognitive function and reduces depression and anxiety via the production of endorphins.

Do something you genuinely love

When was the last time you did something for YOU! And something that you actually really, really love to do? Going grocery shopping alone doesn’t count.
Maybe it’s time to engage your inner child and participate in something you haven’t done in ages.
You have permission to be a beginner and enjoy something purely because you love it–it doesn’t have to be a side hustle and you don’t have to win any awards! Try a new sport with a girlfriend, teach yourself how to knit with YouTube or a book, or exercise your creativity with an art project, like collaging or watercolors.
Research suggests that engaging in activities you enjoy elevates your mood and boosts energy. Who doesn’t want more of that?
