Good Morning,
As the temps cool down and the leaves begin to change, I've found myself more and more inspired by the natural world around me. I stumbled upon a quote recently, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Wow. Patience is not something that comes easily to me, especially because it seems synonymous with slowing down. Slowing down is hard, and I don’t love it. But the older I've gotten, the more I’ve thought about the alternative. If we don’t slow down, we end up spinning, charging, and sprinting for days, weeks, months, and years. And as we know from our workout routines, a pace like that can only lead to injuries and burnout.
We know what happens to our physical body when we don’t prioritize rest, but what happens to our mind and soul when we don’t slow down?
Are you nursing a mind or soul that needs a little peace, or patience, or t.l.c.?

My guess is, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, you also spend a lot of time taking care of other people–cooking nourishing meals for family, checking in on aging parents, sending cards or gifts to celebrate or mourn with those you love.
But how much time do you spend taking care of yourself? When was the last time you cared for your mind, your body, or your spirit the way you would for those around you? When was the last time you truly put yourself first–even for just 5 minutes?
I encourage you to take stock of your current pace and lifestyle. Are you sprinting at an unattainable speed? Are you caring for others instead of yourself? Do your habits bring rest or chaos to your day-to-day life?

If you’re in need of a reset, here are some techniques you can incorporate this week to savor, nourish, and reduce your speed:
1. Take a shower.
- While this may seem like the silliest suggestion, it is a surefire way to feel better temporarily.
- On a day where you just can’t shake the stress, overwhelm or overthinking, take a shower.
- I don’t know if it’s the soothing nature of water or just an opportunity to be alone in the quiet, I promise you’ll thank me later.
2. Stretch.
- While we all know the benefits that moving your body has on health and wellbeing, on the days where you just can’t muster up energy for a workout, take some time to stretch.
- Stretching improves your range of motion, prevents injury, releases tension and so much more.
- If you’re not sure where to start, check out the guided stretches on FIERCE on Demand! Many are under 10-minutes and can be done while watching your morning news or nighttime tv show.
3. Phone a friend.
- Research shows that when you’re feeling low and/or craving human connection, the answer can be as simple as a phone call. And when I say phone call, I do not mean a text message.
- Researchers found that “the voice itself -- even without visual cues -- seemed to be integral to bonding.”
- The next time you find yourself in the car, call a friend or family member. Even if it’s just a short call, I promise you’ll feel more connected.
