The first habit we’re shaking off as we start fresh in the new year is: avoiding rest.
As women, we pride ourselves in pushing, pushing, pushing. We grind, and we grind hard. We do not let anything get in the way of our goals and we do not stop until we get what we want. And that grit and determination is something to be proud of! But it will lead us down a dark hole of burnout, resentment, and a lack of fulfillment if we don’t prioritize rest.
But how do we break free from the go, go, go mentality?
1. Schedule it.
You heard me - schedule your rest! In the same way you plan out your days, events, and necessities, schedule in time to rest.
That could be a long bath with candles, a release & recover session on Fierce on Demand, a walk to clear your head during lunch, a no-workout day; there is no right way to rest.
Start small - schedule 3 rest periods this week, and see how you feel by next Tuesday!
2. Don’t forget about you.
We all are responsible for people or things other than ourselves–family members, kids, plants, pets, businesses – they all count! In the same way that you are innately in tune with what those people and things need to survive, spend some time writing out a list of things YOU need to survive.
X number of hours of sleep per night, 3 workouts a week, time spent with a friend, a date night with my partner, kid-free time – nothing is too small or insignificant.
And as you take care of others, remember to include taking care of yourself.
3. Lose the guilt.
In 2023, we are NOT feeling guilty about rest. Every other species (and pretty much every person in any other country besides the US) prioritize, participate, and engage in seriously restful behavior.
Europeans take a month-long vacation in the summer. Bears hibernate for the entire winter. When the temps drop, plants and trees slow down their metabolisms and enter a state of dormancy. We were not built for no rest!
Let 2023 be the year we fully commit to the rest our bodies and minds both crave and NEED to survive!
