Picking up where we left off last week – if friendship is the secret to success, WHY is making friends so challenging once you’ve hit a certain age?

For those of you who spend time with young children, they need pretty much zero in common to deem someone their “best friend forever.” And if you remember back to college, all it took was a few days together to build a lasting bond, and my guess is some of you all still talk to those college friends pretty regularly!

So why, now that we’re arguably more stable, confident, and (ideally) the versions of ourselves we’d really like to be, is it so much harder to make friends?

As NYT author Alex Williams writes, “In your 30s and 40s, plenty of new people enter your life, through work, children’s play dates and, of course, Facebook. But actual close friends — the kind you make in college, the kind you call in a crisis — those are in shorter supply.”

But why?

Williams continues, citing that as we age, it becomes more difficult to “meet the three conditions that sociologists since the 1950s have considered crucial to making close friends: proximity; repeated, unplanned interactions; and a setting that encourages people to let their guard down and confide in each other” quoting, Rebecca G. Adams, a professor of sociology and gerontology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

So now we know the secret ingredients to long-lasting friendship, but how do we orchestrate all of that? As FIERCE women, we’re not letting barriers stand in our way! It may be harder to find ourselves in physical closeness to new friends or repeatedly running into each other unplanned, or even in the headspace or physical space to have meaningful and honest conversations, but not impossible.

Enter: Retreats!

You may not be a “retreat person” but if you’re seeking new adventures and to be part of a close-knit group of women, retreats are where the magic happens!!

Not only are you put in close proximity with a group of women with at least one shared interest but you’re spending a number of days together with intentional activities that cause you to interact time and time again (think college all over again… but WAY better!). Retreats are also a safe place where there’s time to pause, reflect, change, share, and confide in one another. Retreats provide the perfect environment for building new and life-changing friendships.

Retreats have been part of the FIERCE Fabric for many years and are part of what makes the bonds of the FIERCE tribe unbreakable. We’ve traveled to Taos, Martha’s Vineyard, and Texas, just to name a few. The magic is undeniable and the richness of sisterhood is unbeatable.
